First, I will give you a list of a desktop computer's component or parts and also list what each computer part is and does.

Computer Case
This is where all of the computer parts will be held.
Computer Power Supply Unit (PSU)
This computer part will be supplying power to all of the other computer parts
Mother Board (MoBo) or Main Board
A mother board, mobo, main board is the computer part that all of the other computer parts connect into
Central Processing Unit (CPU) or Processor
This computer component is where all of the work is done as it processes all data being read or written throughout the computer
Random Access Memory (RAM) or System Memory or Main Memory
Computer RAM is used to temporary store data while it is waiting to be processed by the CPU this holds all the data and instructions of every program that is currently running on the computer, after the computer is turned off this memory is erased
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) or Graphics Card or Video Card or Graphics Accelerator
The GPU is the same idea of the CPU but it is dedicated to graphics, which is needed in any computer you want to have a monitor on or some kind of display. This processor is more complex and consumes more power than the CPU
Sound Processing Unit (SPU) or Sound Card or Audio Card
Again this processor is like the CPU and GPU but dedicated to processing sound this will take all of the digital sound signals and convert them to analog output for use on amplifier, speakers, headphones, etc. This also does the oposite for input, it will convert the inputed analog signal to digital.
Network Interface Card (NIC) or Network Card or Ethernet Card
An ethernet card is a peice of computer hardware that allows a PC to communicate through a computer network to share files or internet. This is widely used today to connect to a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) bridge/modem or a Cable Modem
Hard Disk or Hard Drive
A Hard Drive is used to store your data files on your computer, this can be music, movies, photos, documents, programs, etc.
Optical Drives
Optical drives are drives that can read and some write data using optical light rays to store/read data. This is done using a laser which actually burns or melts the surface of the medium to create high and low spots which creates the data. These are your CD Drive (CD-ROM), CD burner/writer (CD-RW), DVD Drive (DVD-ROM), DVD burner/writer (DVD-/+RW), and BluRay Drives.
Computer Cooling
Computer hardware generates a lot of heat and needs some means of cooling to prevent your computer hardware from overheating. Also heat kills computer components so the cooler you keep them generally the longer they will last.
Monitor or Display
This is the computer hardware that will display the visual output of your computer. This is kind of like a TV, which with some video cards you can even use your TV as a monitor.
